A Floor That Takes a Family in Its Stride

Laminate is a dense wood fibre board with a photographic wood or stone surface under a hard, clear wear layer. That wear layer is the point: it resists scratches, dents and fading better than most real wood, which is why it suits a hall, a living room or a home office with a chair on castors.

The ranges we stock have come a long way from the shiny, hollow sounding laminate of twenty years ago. Deep embossing follows the printed grain, bevelled edges make each plank read as a board, and a good underlay takes the echo out of the room.

It is a floating floor, clicked together and never fixed down, so it can be lifted and relaid, and it copes well with a floor that is not perfectly flat.

Daily use, furniture moved about, the dog. AC4 shrugs it off and still looks right in ten years.

AC ratings come from the European abrasion test every laminate is graded on. AC3 is for lighter domestic rooms, AC4 for busy rooms, AC5 and above for commercial floors.

Where Laminate Suits, and Where It Does Not

Living rooms, bedrooms, halls, landings and home offices are laminate's home ground. It is the hard floor we recommend most for a busy family house on a sensible budget, and for landlords who want a floor that will survive several tenancies.

Bathrooms and utility rooms are not the place for it. Laminate is a wood based board and the joints will swell if water sits on them, however good the surface. For a wet room we would point you to sheet vinyl or LVT instead, and we will say so when we measure.

Fitting Laminate Properly

Laminate is only as good as what it sits on. The floor is checked and any high spots taken down, then a proper underlay goes down, with a moisture barrier over concrete. The boards are left in the room to acclimatise before fitting.

The planks are then clicked together from a straight line, with an expansion gap at every wall and threshold that is hidden by the skirting or a matching trim. Miss the gap and the floor will lift in the summer. It is the sort of detail that separates a floor that lasts from one that does not.

Doors are eased if the new floor and underlay come up higher than the old one, and every threshold gets a bar or a flush strip so there is nothing to catch a foot on.

Laminate is a wood fibre board with a printed surface and a hard wear layer, very resistant to scratches. LVT is vinyl all the way through, so it is waterproof and quieter. Laminate usually costs less; LVT goes in wet rooms.

Some water resistant ranges can, if spills are wiped up. We would not put it in a bathroom or a utility room, where sheet vinyl or LVT is the better floor.

AC ratings are the wear classes laminate is graded to. AC3 suits lighter domestic rooms, AC4 busy rooms like halls and living rooms, and AC5 commercial floors. Try the gauge above.

Yes, always. The underlay takes the sound out of the floor, evens out small dips and, over concrete, keeps moisture away from the boards.

Often, yes. If the tiles are sound and reasonably level, a laminate floor can float over them on an underlay. We check when we measure.

Modern ranges have a textured, embossed surface and are no more slippery than a wood floor. A rug at the door and felt pads on the furniture are all it needs.
