A Runner

  • Shows the timber either side, so the stairs stay part of the room.
  • Fixed with rods or discreet fixings, cut and folded at every winder.
  • Easier to lift and replace years on than a fully fitted flight.

Best for

Painted or stripped stairs, period halls, herringbone or wood floors below.

Where the Carpet Works Hardest

A staircase takes more wear per square metre than any other floor in the house. Every step lands on the same few inches of the nosing, so the carpet, the underlay and the fitting all have to be right, or the treads look tired long before the rest of the house.

We fit a dense wool twist or a firm loop pile on stairs, over a stair grade underlay, and we cut and fold every winder so the pile runs the same way up the whole flight. It is slow, careful work and it is the part of the trade we enjoy most.

Runners have come back in a big way, on painted stairs and over the herringbone floors that are going into so many halls. We fit them dead straight with rods or discreet fixings, and we will show you both on the same staircase before you choose.

Fully Fitted Stair Carpet

Wall to wall on every tread and riser, tucked into the crease and stretched over each nosing. It is the warmest and quietest option, the most forgiving of an uneven flight, and it runs straight onto the landing with no break in the carpet.

Choose a carpet that was made for stairs: a dense twist or a loop, in a colour that will forgive the traffic. A long soft saxony looks lovely on a bedroom floor and wears badly on a stair.

Runners and Rods

A runner leaves the timber showing either side, so the staircase stays part of the room. Stripes are popular because they draw the eye up the flight; plain wool runners suit a period hall. Rods are decorative more than structural now, and a runner can equally be fixed with discreet fixings under each nosing.

Runners suit painted or stripped stairs and any hall with a wood or herringbone floor at the bottom. They are also the easier option to lift and replace in years to come.

Winders, Bullnoses and Landings

Winders, the wedge shaped steps on a turning flight, are cut individually so the pattern and the pile direction stay true. A bullnose bottom step is wrapped, not seamed. Half landings are fitted as part of the flight so the carpet reads as one piece from bottom to top.

We do this across Eastbourne and out to Polegate, Hailsham, Bexhill and Lewes, in tight Victorian flights, wide Edwardian staircases and the open plan stairs of new builds alike.

A dense wool twist or a firm loop pile over a stair grade underlay. Both take the concentrated wear on the nosings. We steer people away from long, soft piles on a staircase.

A runner shows the timber and suits painted or stripped stairs; a fully fitted carpet is warmer, quieter and more forgiving of an uneven flight. Use the switch above to compare two of our own.

Yes. Winders are cut and folded individually so the pile runs the same way on every step. It is the part of the job that rewards experience.

Yes. We supply and fit rods with a runner, or fix the runner with discreet fixings under each nosing if you prefer.

A straight flight is usually a morning; winders and a landing take longer. We tell you what to expect when we quote.

Yes. Most people carpet the hall, stairs and landing as one job so the carpet runs through without a change. We plan the seams and the doorways so it reads as one floor.
